Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons (often shortened to Captain Scarlet) is a British science-fiction series created by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson.
Filmed in Supermarionation - electronic marionettes with scale-model effects - by Century 21 for ITC, it ran for 32 episodes of about 25 minutes on ITV in 1967-1968.
Set in 2068, it follows Spectrum, a worldwide security organisation, in a “war of nerves” against the Mysterons, Martians who can reconstruct matter.
After humans destroy their city by mistake, they vow revenge on Earth.
Captain Scarlet becomes Spectrum’s top asset when he gains the Mysterons’ power of retrometabolism - making him virtually indestructible.
In Israel the series was known as «סקרלט ובלשי החלל» (Scarlet and the Space Detectives).
Plot
In 2068, Spectrum sends a mission to Mars after mysterious signals.
Captain Black orders the destruction of an alien complex, mistaking it for an attack - but the Mysterons rebuild it and vow revenge on Earth.
In their first strike Captain Scarlet is killed and reconstructed as a Mysteron agent, then breaks free while keeping their self-healing power.
He becomes Spectrum’s leading agent against Mysteron plots, alongside Captain Blue and others, operating from the airborne base Cloudbase.
Production
The series is one of Gerry and Sylvia Anderson’s Supermarionation productions (alongside Thunderbirds and others). It is often seen as one of their darker shows: tension and violence aimed partly at older viewers as well as children.
A CGI remake, New Captain Scarlet (Hypermarionation), followed in 2005.
In Israel
The Israeli «עולם המצויירים» archive listed the series under the Hebrew title «סקרלט ובלשי החלל» (Scarlet and the Space Detectives). There is no Hebrew Wikipedia article; this entry follows that catalog title and English-language sources.
