Lo Kolel Sherut (Not Including Service) was an Israeli musical teen TV series (1990-1993) starring members of the Tzirei Tel Aviv youth band.
Set in a Tel Aviv cafe run by teens, it mixed coming-of-age stories with songs and dance, and became a symbol of early-1990s Israeli youth television.
What is the show about?
The story is set in a one-of-a-kind Tel Aviv cafe where the waiters, staff, manager, and even many of the customers are teenagers.
The cafe is the backdrop for coming-of-age stories: friendship, first loves, jealousy, school, relationships, violence, drugs, growing up, finishing high school, and army enlistment.
But Lo Kolel Sherut was more than a teen drama.
What made it so identified with the era was the mix of plot, music, and dance.
Across the episodes, members of Tzirei Tel Aviv performed original songs, covers of familiar Israeli songs, and Hebrew versions of foreign hits.
Tzirei Tel Aviv
Behind Lo Kolel Sherut stood Tzirei Tel Aviv, a youth band founded in 1984.
The series gave band members a stage that combined acting, singing, and dancing and turned them into real teen stars.
At the height of their success they performed across Israel and drew a huge fan base.
For many children and teens growing up in Israel in the early 1990s, Lo Kolel Sherut and Tzirei Tel Aviv were part of the era.
The music of Lo Kolel Sherut
Music was central to every episode, not just an add-on. The band performed well-known Israeli songs, Hebrew covers of songs from abroad, and songs written especially for Tzirei Tel Aviv.
Mixing a teen series with music videos, dancing, and songs made Lo Kolel Sherut very different from most Israeli teen shows of the time.
A show for a whole generation
Lo Kolel Sherut was much more than a series about teens working in a cafe.
It mixed music, dance, coming-of-age stories, and colorful early-1990s fashion, and turned the members of Tzirei Tel Aviv into stars.
For anyone who grew up then, a few seconds of the opening theme can bring back the cafe, the waiters with their belt bags, and the time when everyone knew the answer to the question:
Including service? Absolutely not.
