Conan the Adventurer is a 1992-1993 American animated action-fantasy series (65 episodes), loosely based on Robert E. Howard's Conan.

Developed for television by Christy Marx and produced by Sunbow (with Jetlag and partners), it softens the barbarian mythos for a younger audience around Star Metal and serpent men.

In Israel it aired with a Hebrew dub on Channel 2 from 1994, titled «קונן» (also spelled קונאן).

Plot

After the evil sorcerer Wrath-Amon casts a spell on his family, Conan sets out on a quest to save them and thwart Wrath-Amon's plans to restore the evil god Set.

At the heart of the conflict is Star Metal, from which Conan's sword was forged.

The metal can reveal the true form of serpent men and banish them to another dimension.

During his journey Conan is joined by allies including Zula, Jezmine, Greywolf, Snagg and Needle - the phoenix who accompanies him. Together they face Wrath-Amon, the serpent men and other enemies across the world.

Production and background

The series was developed for television by Christy Marx, based on the character and world of Conan by Robert E. Howard.

Production was led by Sunbow Productions, with additional companies including Jetlag Productions.

Unlike some of the books, comics and films that preceded it, the animated series was aimed at a younger audience.

Violence was softened, and Star Metal was given a central role in the series mythology and in the fight against the serpent men.

A Conan the Adventurer toy line was also produced, including action figures of the series heroes and villains.

After the series ended, a 13-episode follow-up titled Conan and the Young Warriors was produced in 1994, in which Conan mentors a group of young warriors.

No Hebrew dub or Israeli broadcast of the sequel is known.
